Dramatic, oversized cotton Saltillo blanket, from the 1930s-50s. Saltillos are a Mexican folk craft classic, and the older ones are highly collectible. The original Saltillos were wool-and-cotton serapes (usually worn by men), woven in northern Mexico in the 18th and 19th centuries. Colorful cotton Saltillo blankets such as this are a mid-20th Century interpretation of the serape, characterized by a central medallion and symmetrically-arrayed bands of subtly-graded color. Older examples have more subdued colors, derived from natural dyes, while later versions will have brighter (even garish) colors. The perfect accent for any Southwestern, Spanish Colonial, or Craftsman design scheme.
