Black Santo

$250.00

Santos are small to life-size statues depicting Catholic saints, used in church altars and religious processions. They are usually carved from wood, and covered with gesso, paint, gilding, and cloth. Santos have been an important folk art form since the 16th century, especially in Mexico, the Caribbean, and South- and Central America.

This santo has really seen some hard times! He appears to have been burned at some point, losing much of his clothing, although traces of paint and gilt remain. One lidless glass eye has a look of surprise; while the other is a rheumy white. It's almost as if he's been martyred all over again... Someone needs to adopt him, give him a safe refuge, and a second chance. Who out there still believes in miracles?
