Lacquer Mame-zara (black)
Lovely set of five small plates (mame-zara, 豆皿), made of lacquered wood decorated in gilt with different botanical elements. Mame-zara are used for condiments like soy sauce and wasabi, or for garnishes like minced green onion, grated ginger, et cetera. When setting the table for a proper Japanese meal (Ichiju Sansai), it is good to have plenty of tiny plates on hand. And remember: it’s the mix, not the match! Lacquerware is resistant to alcohol, et c, but don’t put it in a dishwasher.
