Rustic Hanakago
Dramatic ikebana basket (hanakago 花籠) made from old, smoked bamboo (susutake). The tall, cylindrical body is plaited in a random open weave, for a very natural, rustic effect. A gorgeous basket, with exquisite patina and preservation. Probably early- to mid-20th century (Taisho or early Showa period). Singed on the base Shochikusai (an “art name” taken by many bamboo artists). A similar basket (but without the handle is illustrated in plate 72 in Baskets Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art 1850-2015.
