Jurassic Hashioki
Various customs govern the use of chopsticks in different places. In Japan, chopsticks (hashi) are usually placed horizontally below the diner's plate, tips pointing towards the left. They are often accompanied by a hashi-oki, or chopstick rest, (sometimes called a hashi-makura, or chopstick pillow). Hashioki are a sanitary measure, keeping the chopsticks from coming into contact with the dining table. In ancient Japan, small earthenware plates called kawarake were used for this purpose. Now, however, hashioki can and are made from almost anything!
Ours are made from argillite, a hard, black, fine-grained sedimentary rock formed during the Jurassic Period. The stones are naturally polished to a matte finish in Cascade mountain streams. They are of course washable, and dishwasher safe. The price listed is for a set of two (2). If multiple sets are needed, we will make every effort to provide matching stones, more or less. The charm of these particular hashioki lies in their uniqueness, and their earthy, wabi sabi character.
