Ulla Winblad Hjelmqvist (b. 1933) earned her master's in ceramics from the Konstindustriskolan in Goteborg, Sweden, becoming the chief designer and manager at Alingsas Pottery before emigrating to the U.S. in 1967. She was a prolific and highly-respected studio potter in Washington State until her death in 1992. This vase is an excellent example of her distinctive midcentury modern aesthetic.
